Rocksteady Studios to Make Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Game?
After outstanding critical and commercial successes with Batman: Arkham Asylum, and Batman: Arkham City, next on the to-do lists of the designers at Rocksteady Studios has GOT to be another Batman game, right? Well, according to Paul Gale Network, a different beloved franchise may be in the works. Rocksteady Studios redefined the superhero game genre, and may give the same treatment to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
While this hasn't been confirmed yet by any sort of credible source, the rumours are that not only is this their current project, but that the same gameplay and graphics engine from Arkham City will be used for the new TMNT game. This means that not only will these 4 turtles be given movesets that they have yet to be treated with in a game, but they will actually look like teenaged, mutant turtles that are also ninjas. Other weapons like smoke bombs, climbing foot spikes, and grappling hooks are also rumoured to be in the game, suggesting that the game will be set in a city setting where you can travel using parkour elements and gadgets, and the similar fighting styles of the turtles and Batman himself give the rumour a little more flesh.
But, before we get ahead of ourselves, there are quite a few roadblocks in the way. The biggest of them are licensing issues due to Rocksteady Studios being owned by Time Warner, and Nickelodeon owning the TMNT franchise, as well as Paramount working on a live-action TMNT film, both companies are owned by Viacom, who may not be for the idea of Time Warner getting a piece of the licensing.
Right now, this is just a rumour, but quite a thought-provoking one at that. Imagine running across the rooftops of New York City with your 3 other turtle brothers, armed to the shell with ninja gear, and cool names (Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael), helping the citizens you happen to come across, and sending thugs to emergency wards because you pulled off a mind-blowing combo with your bo staff. With the Penny Arcade Expo East less than 3 months away, we may have to wait a while for any official confirmation or denial of this rumour, but that doesn't mean we can't get the TMNT fever and play our NES copies of the greatest TMNT games of all time!
